Israel justifies Gaza hospital bombing, UN says explanation ‘vague’

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 3 (RTSG) – On Friday, Israel proclaimed the justifications for bombing a North Gaza hospital last week, while the UN human rights chief said that the justifications given were vague and unsubstantiated. The World Healtbh Organization also pleaded Israel to release the director of the hospital. Israel’s UN representative Daniel Meron said that the bombing was “triggered by irrefutable evidence” that Hamas and Palestinian fighters were using the hospital.

Human rights official Volker Turk told the U.N. Security Council on Friday that Israel did not “substantiate many of these claims, which are often vague and broad. In some cases, they appear to be contradicted by publicly available information.”

Palestinian UN representative Riyad Mansour quoted from a doctor from Médecins sans Frontières, Mahmoud Abu Nujaila, who wrote on a whiteboard at Gaza’s Al Awda Hospital before he was killed in a strike in November 2023.

Mansour said that Nujaila had wrote: “Whoever stays until the end, will tell the story. We did what we could. Remember us.”
