UK Police go after “Online Hatespeech” during recent protests

Hundreds of protestors and thousands of counter-protestors continue to crowd the streets of London and other major cities in the United Kingdom, marking the seventh day of deadly demonstrations that have swept the UK after the recent killing of three children by an alleged migrant.

Several thousand police officers have remained on duty throughout the weekend in the event that violence would flare up again between the two groups of demonstrators, but for nearly four days, the violence has seemingly abated. Prime Minister Starmer has cancelled his planned holidahy to focus on his government’s response to the riots which have become infamous both in the country and online.

Starmer has stated that the government has moved quickly to speed up the arrests, counting nearly 750 in total. Police have stated that more arrests are to come for months afterwards.

The National Police Chief’s Council, a representative body of law enforcement leaders, have said that ‘specialist officers’ have been ordered to pursue ‘online offenders and influencers’ who have been responsible for ‘spreading hate and inciting violence’.

“Online crimes have real world consequences and you will be dealt with in the same way as those phyiscally present and inflicing the violence,” says Chris Haward, the Chief’s Council’s leader in charge of dealing with serious and organized crime.

Two UK citizens have been jailed in recent days for their posts online, who had been falsely reporting that the murderer was an ‘Islamist migrant’.
